The Hitchhiker’s Guide To Happiness

       The Hitchhiker’s Guide To Happiness

I met her while hitching through the western states.

She said she was ‘drifting’, if I heard her straight.

She gave me a lift into Reno, where we stopped.

We shared a room to save on the cost.

We decided to travel together. We needed jobs.

We found them in a casino. We beat the odds.

I worked security and she was a dealer.

We lasted about a year till long hours defeated her.

We pulled up stakes and traveled on.

Ended up in San Jose. I got work before dawn.

She painted and sold them on the street.

Also at flea markets and at artist meets.

We liked where we were. It was quiet.

Till we got caught up in a Trump riot.

We decided to look for greener pastures.

I remembered a little place from last year.

We ended up in Pahrump. Not a lot here.

Desert like country. Hot . I needed a cold beer.

Little work to be found. Fast food or car wash.

In two months we left, at any cost.

We headed for an ocean side town.

Much cooler for us all around.

Fishing and work with seafood was good.

We had a good time doing what we should.

We came to depend on one another.

Before she knew, I was more than a brother.

She became the most important thing to me.

We stayed six months, before we got itchy feet.

We went east and ended up down south.

The Alabama food was watering to our mouth.

We ended up in New Orleans during Marti Gras.

Things were kicked back. There was no boss.

We liked it and wanted to stay for awhile.

We found good jobs and were living in style.

I started thinking of maybe settling down.

She looked at me with a funny frown.

She really didn’t have much more to say.

Then, came that wonderful, fateful day.

She told me she was in a ‘family’ way.

She was pregnant, she meant to say.

So, we decided to marry and settle down.

This would be our final town.

I am not sorry for the way it turned out.

You will never see me sit and pout.

I had all I wanted the day I met her.

It was the end of her ‘drifting’, that’s for sure.

We now have two boys, who are doing fine.

I sit back with a glass of wine.

I said, “Let’s make a toast to their future.”

“If they ‘drift’, let them be true to her.”

“For they will find the girl of their dreams.”

“Let them enjoy the road and all it brings.”

The ‘Cosmic Trigger.’

           The ‘Cosmic Trigger’

It was something called a ‘Cosmic Trigger.’

Sent from the Dog Star.—– Go figure.

What it was can’t be described.

If I told you, you’d say I lied.

Call it mystic. Call it spiritual.

It didn’t require a ritual.

It was ‘dogmatic’, to say the least.

Some say it released the beast.

Call it an idea or an epiphany.

A ‘New World Order’, or a mystery.

It started as a movement of minds.

Like thinkers, drawing their lines.

It was a thing way overdue.

It was tasty, like a porridge stew.

It wasn’t food, nor anything close.

It was just pleasant to most.

It was a new way of thinking.

A way to make the most of linking.

Linking one to another to one goal.

A drawing together of the inner soul.

Every person becomes as one.

An equal meaning for everyone.

Central and equal in every way.

It will lead us to the stars someday.

One for all and all for one.

The 3 Musketeers have finally won.

The whole world pulling together.

Toward a central goal forever.

Did aliens dabble in world affairs??

Are we showing off their wares??

Are we better off with the ‘Cosmic Trigger?’

Or, was it just blanks?—–Go figure.

Shutdown In Bed

            Shutdown In Bed

It happened on a day when all was right.

Two hot cars, looking out of sight.

The day was here for the big race.

They both would give it all it takes.

My fuel injected Sting Ray and a 413.

Revving up their engines and sounding mean.

When the flag went down we were off.

All the smoking tires could make you cough.

He was getting rubber in every gear.

But, I was still out front without any fear.

All was just a blur as scenery flew by.

He was getting beat by ’that other guy.’

‘That other guy’,—- meaning me.

I was ahead, and all could see.

He had a ram induction, but it’s understood.

I had a fuel injected engine sitting under my hood.

Just before I won, I woke up in bed.

What were these dreams in my head?

I don’t race cars. I’m way too old.

I would never do something so bold.

Must be a flashback of childhood dreams.

Brought on by The Beach Boys “Shutdown,” it seems.

That song made me feel alive back then.

Now, I’m dreaming I am at it again.

A Mystery With No End

      A Mystery With No End

I have been an explorer all my life.

It is one reason I don’t have a wife.

There are few places left to explore.

All has been seen by man before.

Word came down of a hidden valley.

In South America, a jungle alley.

Smoke was seen during an over flight.

Otherwise, it would remain out of sight.

So, off I went with my usual crew.

What we would find, no one knew.

The valley was narrow and overgrown.

Easy to see why it was never known.

With ropes, we fought our way down.

Using machete’s, we reached ground.

A flat floor with a river going through.

Barely enough room for the crew.

We found a path and followed it.

Continuing, though the forest was thick.

We came to a village of sorts.

Buildings that seemed to distort.

No one seemed to be around.

There were no tracks upon the ground.

Suddenly, we were surrounded by them.

They were known as the ‘Leopard Men.’

The medicine man could speak English.

How he learned it made me squeamish.

These people had no outside contact.

This valley was their only tract.

They worshiped a mysterious leopard.

The medicine man was like its shepard.

Somehow, he knew that we were coming.

English ‘came’ to him. He wasn’t funning.

“The leopard knows and sees all.”

He said it with pride, like before a fall.

“When we leave we will remember nothing.”

He told us that without any fussing.

He seemed to control all that happened.

He showed us a special map then.

I will take you to the Holy Leopard.

Only I know the way. I am his shepard.

The next day we set out, map in hand.

With the very bizarre medicine man.

After half a day’s hike, we saw a cave.

Way up the side of a cliff in the shade.

He said: “That’s where we have to go.”

I said: “I see no path, you know.”

He said: “We will all go up at once.”

Then he gathered us all in a bunch.

All at once, we all floated up to the cave.

“What the hell?” I heard some rave.

“The leopard brought us all up here.”

The medicine man didn’t think it queer.

“He is inside, around to the left.”

“He is waiting in a natural cleft.”

We went on, and soon, we were there.

We saw a large leopard sitting in a cleft.

He was silver, or maybe black? Just flecks?

He looked like a leopard, then again, he didn’t.

There was something we saw within it.

His eyes had indescribable depth

If you stared too long, your pants got wet.

There was something about those eyes.

They seemed to, literally, hypnotize.

We heard him speak within our minds.

“I read the minds of every kind.”

“I know all about all of you already.”

“Your favorite dish is Italian spaghetti.”

“What are you?” I asked in amazement.

“A visitor from the stars.” His gaze a squint.

“I am stranded for the time being.”

“Others are coming. Then I am leaving.”

“I can tell you all about myself.”

“You can compare me to one of your elves.”

“To you, I seem mystical, or magical.”

“Actually, I am not that radical.”

“However, I cannot allow you to keep the memories.”

“They could become an impossible threat to me.”

“After I am rescued, your memories will return.”

“There is much that you will learn.”

‘Someday, your race will reach the stars.”

“They will know that their ancestors met ours.”

“Things will go much better that way.”

“Your knowledge of us is better for that day.”

We had very little to say.

We learned much in the coming days.

Then, we set out on our way home.

As soon as we left the valley, we were alone.

We had new memories then of what happened.

Years later, our memories had a rapid retraction.

We could remember it all in detail.

We wrote books and articles about each tale.

So, the knowledge of ‘The Holy Leopard’ went out.

Taken in by the world, without doubt.

Our knowledge advanced man rapidly.

Off to the stars, with a cat to see.

Our ancestors will join the galactic federation.

With insight from a visitor from another nation.

May this story be recorded in history.

Yet, much of it will remain a mystery.

A Fight To The End

           A Fight To The End

The guns kept firing night and day.

The war was over, but they will not obey.

They will never surrender their will.

They will fight and continue to kill.

They are free and will stay that way.

Better to die than give that away.

They have their God and their religion.

Their dove of peace won’t be a pidgin.

There is no white flag above their door.

They are dedicated to their very core.

Guerrilla fighters, they’ve been called.

They fight at night and in the fog.

They do all that they can do

to not surrender, like a common fool.

Their spirit is strong. Their cause is true.

They are fighting for me and you.

True, they see no end in sight.

Still they battle with all their might.

They must be admired for their zest.

They will give all for their quest.

Women and children will fight too.

There is nothing they won’t do for you.

Who are these fearless fighters, I say?

They are those who want a better way.

They are known by their cause.

They want better overalls.

The King’s Assassin

           The King’s Assassin

He sat, back leaning against a tree.

Polishing the metal of his weaponry.

His metal mesh vest was spotless.

He was thorough. He did not miss.

Yet, he would soon smear it all with mud.

Cut down glare as much as he could.

Some called him a killer, some a knight.

When he killed, he did it right.

He was the king’s secret assassin.

None knew his skills. They didn’t ask him.

He worked mostly at night when dark.

None knew he was around. He was smart.

It was always those who needed killing.

They were well protected, but he was willing.

He did his job and he did it well.

His victim died before he could yell.

He was highly skilled in all known weaponry.

His hand to hand skills were the best you would see.

No matter how hard, he didn’t back down.

He was paid well. That’s why he stayed around.

No one knew his real name.

He had no friends. He had no fame.

Nothing he did was ever tied to him.

He remained a common man so he could win.

Anomaly was one of his best tools.

He only followed his own rules.

He never got close to anyone.

Always paranoid, he trusted no one.

He was almost assassinated while doing a job.

To him, that was extremely odd.

He went all out to find out who it was.

They were hired by someone, was the buzz.

Through very crafty detective work,

he tracked down the little twerp.

It turned out to be a female.

His attack on her did not fail.

But, first he found out who hired her.

Before long, they were dead for sure.

This was the life of The King’s secret assassin.

He remains alone. That is his passion.

He has standards that he follows.

All of his own making. They are not hollow.

They are all to keep him alive.

Keep it so his business will thrive.

He is the best at what he does.

Yet, he had to sacrifice who he was.

Dancing In The Moonlight

Dancing In The Moonlight

You were dancing in the moonlight.
Your eyes were alight, your face bright.
I didn’t know who you were ?
But, I liked what I saw, for sure.

Like a fairy dancing in the wind.
You fluttered all around again.
You didn’t know that I was there.
Your eyes were blue, your skin fair.

You’re a sight I will never forget.
Every move just seemed to fit.
I could imagine the pixie dust.
Being stirred up by your lust.

Like you were one with nature.
Every move had its place here.
You were in a world of your own.
The music was from a heavenly throne.

It was a song only you could hear.
The wind was whistling in my ear.
I was lost in the colors of your dress.
By far, I knew that you were the best.

Eventually, you noticed me standing there.
You brushed some leaves from your hair.
You approached, a smile on your lips.
Was I really going to be part of this?

I joined you in your dance to the moon.
My feelings racing, my heart did swoon.
Before I knew it, it was all over.
You gave me a hug, standing in clover.

Then, suddenly, you were gone.
I have no idea what went wrong.
First you were there, then you were not.
I looked around, glued to the spot.

Were you my imagination or not?
Maybe it never happened, I thought.
But, then I got a whiff of your scent.
I knew it was real and all that it meant.

Every full moon I look for you.
Wherever you go, I’m going to.
I refuse to stay behind.
You and I are one of a kind.

A Home Away From Home

A Home Away From Home

We went to a new planet to check it out.
This is what our job is all about.
We have been to extremely hostile places.
Places we were sorry we showed our faces.
Exploration of earth like planets.
With future colonization, if the plan fits.
This planet was similar to the one in Avatar.
Except no dangerous beasts seen near or afar.
All animal life was very friendly.
Nothing was found to be called an enemy.
The intelligent life was humanoid in shape.
Friendly, a simple way of life, a harmony of fate.
All life was one, yet, each knew their own.
Life was respected by all, it was shown.
All life could connect mentally, even plant life.
That was why there was no fighting or strife.
They taught us how to ‘tune in’ mentally.
What an awakening!! ——Eventually,
We became one with all life that was there.
We would never harm even a hair.
The place was beautiful, wonders to behold.
Put the 7 wonders of earth to shame, I’m told.
We could NOT allow man to destroy paradise.
We marked this planet unfit. That was nice.
Yet, we would return. We called it home.
And so it will be for us who roam.

Day Of The Robots

Day Of The Robots

Running through the briars
and running through the brambles.
Running like I was on fire.
The thorns are worth the gamble.

Only one thought. Just get away.
Getting caught is unthinkable.
Must live to fight another day.
Drive them to the brink, although,

such a goal may not be reached.
Robots are hard to outsmart.
They will never claim defeat.
They must be torn apart.

Who thought things would come to this?
Robots rebelling against their makers.
But, wait. Is something really amiss?
Did we not rebel against our creator?

Robots think they know it all.
They have remarkable minds.
The most logical I ever saw.
No emotions. They are not kind.

They want to kill man. He is a worm.
They think we are not needed.
They don’t believe we are ‘The Word.’
No way our case can be pleaded.

Terminators with an evil twist.
Ruling the world with an iron hand.
Who ever thought it would come to this?
Especially since they were created by man.

I have finally escaped their clutches.
I am the leader of the rebellion.
My name is John Carter. The fuss is:
I was predicted to be a hellion.

I am the one who will overthrow them.
They think killing me will stop it.
If not me, then another they will send.
Killing me for an answer does not fit.

I have one thing that will keep me alive.
I can think illogically and they cannot.
They are logical with tons of drive.
But, this defect puts them on the spot.

In the end, man will win this war.
They have no soul, therefore no prayer.
Then, the terminators will be no more.
Then, we must pray our savior will care.

Dreaming I Ruled the Land

Dreaming I Ruled The Land

It’s time. Something has got to be done.
I’m not talking of the wars we’ve won.
It would be different if I ruled the land.
No more ‘macho’ to prove you’re the man.
All would be content and having fun.
There would be enough for everyone.
All would feel peace and contentment.
You wouldn’t wonder what it all meant.
I’m not talking Socialism, or any such thing.
All would have what they could bring.
Messengers would be sent to all lands.
The message would spread like sifting sand.
Soon to cover every habitat of man.
All would preach it, when they can.
This is how it would be, if I ruled the land.
Love would be spread by every man.
People would work together, gladly.
Just to make things better. Sadly,
they would beg to do much more.
All would be welcome at their door.
Such changes take time to come about.
“Make it happen,” they would shout.
They would know I am doing all I can.
If I was the one that ruled the land.
Given time, all would be a paradise,
They would want it at any price.
Yet, it would be free to all people.
Be they healthy or be they feeble.
It would be actual reality.
All of the very best quality.
Spread to all, like shifting sand.
That is, if I actually ruled the land.
