I was fairly new in town.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

I wasn\u2019t much into fooling around.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

I drove down town for food.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

I was in a pretty good mood.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

I stopped into the A & W stand.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

I feel like a root beer, when I can.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

A sweet little honey skated up to me.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The waitresses wore roller skates, you see.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

I placed an order & she gave me a wink.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

I was so surprised I couldn\u2019t think.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

When my order came, there was a note<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

It was her name & #. Call me, she wrote.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

I just looked at it, I was in shock.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

It just wasn\u2019t happening to me,—- or not.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

I waited a couple of days.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Then I called her, wondering what to say.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

She was apologetic for being so bold.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI have never done that before\u201d, she told.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the first time it\u2019s happened to me.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI just can\u2019t believe that.\u201d She said with glee.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

I said \u201cNow that introductions are made<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

would go out with me? Don\u2019t be afraid.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

She said yes and that she wasn\u2019t scared.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

She just wanted me to know she cared.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

We went to dinner & to a movie.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

She was as snuggly as can be.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

I dropped her off & kissed her goodbye.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Leaving, I thought, not bad. I didn\u2019t even try.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

After several more dates she was my girl.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

When I\u2019m with her I get a thrill.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

All summer long we were together.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

We had a blast. Her name was Heather.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

We did everything you could think of.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

My heart was higher than the clouds above.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

By autumn, it became true love. What a game.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve known other girls. It wasn\u2019t the same.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

We each had Senior year of high school to do.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

I was sticking with her. I was no fool.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

It was one of the best years of my life.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The fact we were going steady made it just right.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

After graduation we were both off to college.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

If she dated others, it was without my knowledge.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

After college, we had to decide.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Were we together only for the ride?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

If not, we had to make serious plans.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

She became mine & I became her man.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Many years later I look back at all this.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Could there have been something I had missed?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Absolutely not!! I have what I wanted.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

I am glad we pushed on, undaunted.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
