\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Romance in \u2018Redneck\u2019 Country<\/strong><\/p>\n Thank you Lord, it\u2019s finally Friday night.<\/p>\n I got a date with Joey. He\u2019s gonna hold me tight.<\/p>\n I am getting prettied up and ready to go.<\/p>\n Papa said \u201cBaby, are you putting on a show?\u201d<\/p>\n I said \u201cI got a date with Joey tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n He said \u201cYou mean that kid whose always gettin in fights?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYes Papa, but, they weren\u2019t his fault.\u201d \u201cThe other kids wouldn\u2019t stop when he said halt.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYou don\u2019t a be listenen to a kid like Joey.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIfin he comes around I don\u2019t want ya ta go, see.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cPapa we\u2019ve been through this before.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m old enough ya don\u2019t tell me what ta do no more.\u201d<\/p>\n Papa went in his room and slammed the door.<\/p>\n I just stood there starin at the floor.<\/p>\n Pretty soon I hear Joey on the porch.<\/p>\n He was a whistling at the horse.<\/p>\n I ran out and said \u201cLet\u2019s hit the road.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhat\u2019s the hurry gal? You swallow a toad?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cPapa is mad and he might come out.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhat\u2019s this all about?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cTell ya later. I think I heard his voice.\u201d<\/p>\n We were out of there laying rubber, of course.<\/p>\n We went to dinner then took in a dance.<\/p>\n What a way to start a romance.<\/p>\n Spinning and twirling around the floor.<\/p>\n Then dancing real slow. We yelled for more.<\/p>\n He dropped me off a little after eleven.<\/p>\n I went floating in the door feeling like I\u2019d been to heaven.<\/p>\n Papa met me in the hall.<\/p>\n He was mad enough to make me bawl.<\/p>\n He yelled & hollered & stomped his feet.<\/p>\n Said if I kept this up he would toss me into the street.<\/p>\n I ran to my room crying all the way.<\/p>\n After awhile, mama came in to pray.<\/p>\n \u201cGive him time dear and he will calm down.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cSometimes he\u2019s more of an ass than a clown.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cMama, Joey\u2019s not a bad boy\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI know dear. Just, around papa you must be coy.\u201d<\/p>\n I loved my mama. She was the best.<\/p>\n I often wondered why she was different than the rest.<\/p>\n She said \u201dWhen papa and I first met\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cMy dad felt the same way. He\u2019s still mad yet.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cHe said papa was no good.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIfin I stayed with him it would come ta no good.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYour papa was determined ta prove him wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThat is why we have been together so long.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cPapa sees himself when he looks at Joey.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhen papa was young he was quite the bully.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYou just hang in there, but be very coy.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ll talk to papa & remind him of when he was a boy.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIn the long run it will work out.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cPapa won\u2019t want ta be like my dad, he will shout.\u201d<\/p>\n Mama was right. I always knew she was.<\/p>\n Papa even gave me away because.<\/p>\n No matter what anyone could say.<\/p>\n He wasn\u2019t like his father in law in any way.<\/p>\n —————————————————-R. W.
