The Soldier<\/p>\n
A\u00a0 snow storm was raging outside the cabin.<\/p>\n
She heard something like scraping at the door.<\/p>\n
She did not want to let something bad in.<\/p>\n
Yet, she knew, she could do no more.<\/p>\n
She opened the door and a man fell in.<\/p>\n
It was a soldier, covered with snow & ice.<\/p>\n
He said \u201cI could have been enemy then.\u201d<\/p>\n
She said \u201cNo, cause you knocked nice.\u201d<\/p>\n
Puzzled, He got up & brushed off the snow.<\/p>\n
He was a soldier, trained from the womb.<\/p>\n
War and killing was his only goal.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am here to protect you from the enemy doom.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAre you living here alone?,\u201d he shivered.<\/p>\n
\u201cYes,\u201d she said. \u201cMy husband died long ago.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThis war could last the rest of winter.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI may be here that long before I go.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou are welcome to stay. Do you need food?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI haven\u2019t eaten in a day or so.\u201d<\/p>\n
She busied herself preparing some food.<\/p>\n
He barred the door. No one would go.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy do you live way out here all alone?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMy husband was a trapper. I stayed on.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was killed in an avalanche.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI stayed\u00a0 here after he was gone.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHow do you live in this circumstance?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI trap too. Sell the furs in the fall.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt gets lonely at times, but I love it here.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then they heard a noise outside. A call.<\/p>\n
They both knew the enemy was near.<\/p>\n
A bang on the door & the soldier fired .<\/p>\n
They heard a thump on the door outside.<\/p>\n
A moan was heard like someone was tired.<\/p>\n
The woman went to look outside.<\/p>\n
The soldier said \u201cNO.\u201d He indicated silence.<\/p>\n
No other sound was heard outside.<\/p>\n
The woman opened the door in defiance.<\/p>\n
An enemy soldier laid there wounded.<\/p>\n
The woman grabbed him & drug him in.<\/p>\n
The soldier went to shoot him<\/p>\n
The woman stopped him. \u201cThis is sin.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI am a soldier. it is my duty.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHe is wounded. I will help him.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou cannot aide the enemy.\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI will help anyone hurt in my home.\u201d<\/p>\n
The soldier went to sit on the bed.<\/p>\n
She dressed his wounds then he moaned.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy are you helping me?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are all equal under God\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n
\u201cLove your enemy as yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n
Both soldiers were shocked at such statements.<\/p>\n
She lifted the wounded soldier into bed herself.<\/p>\n
The soldier kept fading in & out of consciousness.<\/p>\n
the other soldier said \u201cI think he\u2019s dying.\u201d<\/p>\n
She said \u201cHe stopped bleeding. He was found with this.\u201d<\/p>\n
She held up a cross on a chain. She was crying.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t understand. What\u2019s that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n
She explained the cross and what it meant.<\/p>\n
\u201c I have never heard this. It could cause a scene.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIf soldiers followed such rules, they would recant.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cTheir pledge to be a soldier would be useless.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cListen to the Holy Spirit as it speaks to you\u201d<\/p>\n
The soldier squirmed. His cause felt fruitless.<\/p>\n
In a few days the wounded soldier died.<\/p>\n
Before dying, he asked for forgiveness from God.<\/p>\n
The soldier was shocked. \u201cWhat?\u201d, he cried.<\/p>\n
She said \u201cHe made peace with his God\u201d<\/p>\n
They buried him with rocks and snow.<\/p>\n
The woman said a prayer over him.<\/p>\n
The soldier was confused. He wanted to know.<\/p>\n
She explained the principle of sin.<\/p>\n
For a few months she gave him Bible lessons.<\/p>\n
He rebelled at first, then something happened.<\/p>\n
As the Holy Spirit convicted his heart during sessions,<\/p>\n
he began to see the truth. And he confessed bad sins.<\/p>\n
He knelt and asked for forgiveness.<\/p>\n
He was converted. Jesus was his Lord now.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat will you do now?\u201d she asked with firmness.<\/p>\n
\u201cI will resign my position & follow the Lord somehow.\u201d<\/p>\n
As he left in the spring, he said \u201cI will see you again soon.\u201d<\/p>\n
In the fall he returned to her.<\/p>\n
He took her in his arms & her heart swooned.<\/p>\n
He was a new soldier now. That was sure.<\/p>\n
A soldier in God\u2019s army saving souls<\/p>\n
He would fight side by side with her.<\/p>\n
God and her, wherever he goes.<\/p>\n
